Dr. Kay Glasser had a vision for delivering health and human services in a more efficient way. She achieved this vision by forging an alliance of both private philanthropy, public sectors and financial institutions which culminated in the establishment of the Glasser/Schoenbaum Human Services Center, a 501 © (3) corporation, located in the northern part of Sarasota County, Sarasota, Florida.
Opened in 1990, the Center has been nationally recognized as a unique Management Service Organization. Now, 17 years later this "one-stop shop" for the delivery of health and human services has touched the lives of many thousands of people in Sarasota County.
The Center is a very special place. Located on a beautiful campus with shaded walkways, it is accessible by public transportation. The agencies occupy rent-free buildings and pay minimum fees for water, sewer, electricity, maintenance and janitorial service. This enables the agencies to keep their operational expenses to a minimum, and has released millions of dollars for client services. Over the years thus far, over five million dollars has been made available for this purpose.
The co-location of the agencies have promoted a high level of interaction and communication among the agencies, resulting in enhancing the quality of services for clients requiring the assistance of several agencies.
In addition, the relationship of the Board of Directors and the Executive Directors of the agencies has created a precedent setting organization which has become a model for other communities.
The Center and the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee have joined in a partnership through service, scholarship, joint research and collaborative learning for students and faculty of the University and the agencies, thus further increasing the contribution which the Center is making to the Sarasota community.
